THE FUTURE
So what will the future hold for CERN? What's the plan after "The Large Hadron Collider"? These days, a new particle accelerator is being developed that has a higher performance than the previous particle accelerator, "High Luminosity - Large Hadron Collider" (HL-LHC). The accelerator will aim to reach collision energies of 100 TeV and expand research into new physics. The expansion is an international collaboration with universities, research institutes, and industrial partners worldwide. Norway will participate in the upgrade of this infrastructure, and much of the development work will take place in Norway.
Around 2035, the LHC and the HL-LHC upgrade will approach their lifespan limits. Thus, new possibilities for particle accelerators and collisions, such as hadron (proton-proton and heavy-ion) collisions, as in the LHC; electron-positron collisions, as in previous LEP; and proton-electron collisions.
